This is a slightly
expanded arrangement of the fourth piece from my First Book of
Dances and Songs (op. 14). For the band version I added
a number of
small details, mostly inner voices, to the existing music. Due to the weight
of the band sound compared to the original piano version, I felt that
an introduction was necessary. The main melody, when it comes, is sung by
a mellow trumpet, somewhat in the manner of Chuck Mangione. The band
version
of A Song for Joanne was first performed in May 1988 by the
Cornell University Wind Ensemble.
